Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has backed his ex-captain, Patrick Vieira to succeed on his return to the Premier League as manager. Vieira on Sunday, was appointed the new Crystal Palace boss. The Frenchman has only previously coached New York City FC in the Major Soccer League (MLS) and Nice in Ligue 1. But Wenger, who worked with Vieira as a player for nine seasons, insists he will be a “great asset” to Palace. Arsenal have finally reached an agreement with French Ligue 1 club Marseille, over a loan deal with an obligation to buy their player, Matteo Guendouzi. TF1 reports that Guendouzi is now set to arrive in Marseille on Monday to complete his medical. The France Under-21 international first joined Arsenal back in 2018 from Lorient. He initially showed plenty of promise under former Gunners manager, Unai Emery. But Guendouzi fell out of favour under current Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, and was banished from the squad following an incident on the pitch in which he grabbed Brighton’s Neal Maupay by throat in June last year. The 22-year-old didn’t feature for Arteta’s side for the rest of the 2020/21 season. The midfielder was subsequently loaned out to Hertha Berlin for the 2020/21 campaign. Manchester United playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, has said he will have to wait one more year before he gets the no 8 shirt from Juan Mata. Mata has agreed a contract extension with the club. The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that the 33-year-old had agreed to stay at Old Trafford until June 2022. Fernandes previously wore the No 8 shirt at Sporting Lisbon and has worn the No 18 since arriving in Manchester. “I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year. “Congrats brother!! Former Nigeria international, Finidi George, has tipped either Spain or Italy to win the ongoing European Championship. The quarter-final of the competition began on Friday evening. Spain eliminated Switzerland via penalties, while Italy beat Belgium 2-1. They will now face off in the last four. George feels the winner of the tournament will be decided in that game. “That’s a tough one but I tip Spain or Italy for the title. “They have won it in the past and the experience is there – which I believe will play a key role in terms of determining the winner. “However, any team can spring up surprises and win. Jose Mourinho has said he already wants a new contract with Roma. The 58-year-old was officially unveiled as the Serie A club’s new manager on Friday. Mourinho was welcomed by a crowd of passionate supporters at their Trigoria training complex. Norwich City have signed Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour on a season-long from Chelsea. The 20-year-old impressed for Scotland in a goalless draw against England at Euro 2020 on 18 June. He tested positive for Covid-19 after the game and has completed the move following a period of self-isolation. “I’ve been looking forward to coming here, playing as much as possible and helping Norwich City compete in the Premier League,” said Gilmour. “I spoke to the head coach [Daniel Farke]. Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, became the first player to welcome Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford. It has been earlier reported that Manchester United officially confirmed a transfer deal for Sancho after they reached a £73.1 million agreement with Borussia Dortmund. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Saturday said some bandits terrorizing the state are currently targeting his seven-year-old son, Abubakar Al-Sadiq El-Rufai. In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Governor El-Rufai said he secretly withdrew his son from Kaduna Capital school following intelligence that the bandits were planning to attack the school to kidnap his son. Reports on Friday indicated that the Governor secretly withdrew the boy from one of northern Nigeria’s oldest public schools where he was enrolled in 2020. “My son and my daughter are registered in the school because his sister turned six and we had to register her. “But we have had to temporarily withdrew them for the security of the school because we got intercepts from at least two groups that are planning to attack the school to kidnap my son,” he said. Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed the reason for the withdrawal of his seven-year-old son, Abubakar Al-Sadiq El-Rufai, from Kaduna Capital school. In an interview with BBC Pidgin, El-Rufai revealed that his son had been targeted by bandits because of the governor’s public stand against the payment of ransom to bandits. Manchester City will earn around £10 million following Jadon Sancho’s move from Borussia Dortmund to their rivals Manchester United. United and Dortmund have agreed a transfer fee of just under £73m. Sancho is now set to undergo a medical before the deal is completed. City initially received £8m when he left their Academy to move to Germany in 2017, but also negotiated a 15% share of any future transfer. The Premier League champions paid Sancho’s boyhood club Watford a fee of around £66,000 when he joined the club as a 14-year-old. He was part of the same youth team as Phil Foden and the pair seemed destined to break into the first team. Sassuolo midfielder, Manuel Locatelli, is set for a shock move to Arsenal this summer.
